SCHOOL HOURS AND ATTENDANCE

This year, new construction in the elementary schools dictate some change in the times for students as follows:

Ulysses Byas: 8:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.

Centennial: 8:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.

Washington Rose: 8:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.

Middle School: 7:45 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.

High School: 8:00 a.m. – 2:34 p.m.

New Horizons: 3:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

New York State Education Law permits absence from school for the following reasons
only: personal illness, family death or illness, impassable roads or weather making travel unsafe,
religious observance, one hour per week for religious instruction at the written request of parent,
quarantine, school-supervised education trips and required presence in court. All other absences
are considered illegal and must be so recorded on the student’s record. The same instructions
apply to tardiness.

Written excuses signed by the parent giving the date and the exact reason for the absence or
tardiness are required by the state and must be presented by the student at the first session to which
he/she returns. Any student absent from school five or more consecutive days (for whatever reason)
will need a note from the doctor in order to return to school. In addition to the required written excuse,
whenever possible, the school appreciates a phone call from the parent when students are absent.
In order for a student to be excused before school is dismissed a parent must call the school and
send a note of explanation. A parent should make every effort to pick up the child at the school.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING

If schools are closed or remain closed because of inclement weather or other emergencies, the
decision will be made by 5:45 a.m. each morning. In this event, all daytime and evening schedules
are canceled. The following television and radio stations begin announcements as early as 6:00
a.m. and continue throughout the morning.
