Curriculum and Instruction - middle school music program

At the middle school level, general music courses are offered to students in grades 6 and 7. A few of the many topics covered include:

• The development of active listening skills
• Critiquing and responding to music
• Creating original compositions
• Identifying and performing intervals in octaves and unison
• Determining voice tone and range
• Reading and playing rhythm patterns
• Notation
• Music history

Elective Music Program

In addition, elective courses are offered to students to continue to develop their musical skills. Students may select courses in chorus, orchestra, and band.

As students enter the middle school instrumental programs, they should have a strong foundation from their participation in the instrumental program at the elementary level.

Middle School instrumental students should successfully complete lesson book 2 by the end of eighth grade. Many eighth grade students begin lesson book 3 prior to entering the high school instrumental programs.

Middle school students perform at school concerts, All City concerts, in-house NYSSMA festivals, and special events at the request of the community. They also participate in musical competitions.
